About this node

SWNE-BASE is the primary anchor node of the Sewanee Mesh, located near the Sewanee airport in Sewanee, Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. Unlike a pure repeater, this is a full messaging node — it accepts messages from other users on the network and relays them across the mesh.

As the base node of the network, SWNE-BASE forms the backbone of local Meshtastic coverage, working together with the repeater at Green's View and any future nodes to blanket the Sewanee area with off-grid radio connectivity.

SWNE-BASE serves as both a relay and a reachable node. If you're in Sewanee with a Meshtastic device, you can send messages to and through this node. It relays all traffic it hears, extending the mesh for every user in range.

Part of a larger network

SWNE-BASE is one node in the growing Sewanee Mesh. Each node extends coverage for every other user. Together they create a resilient, decentralized communication network across the plateau.

The Sewanee Mesh is designed to grow. Each new node — whether a stationary repeater like SWNE-GRVW or a portable device carried by a hiker — strengthens the network for everyone. See how to add your own device.

Meshtastic works when nothing else does. No subscription. No towers. No single point of failure.

How to get started

Getting onto the Meshtastic network takes about an hour and costs around $30–$60 for hardware. Here's the basic path:

  1. Get a device

Meshtastic runs on a variety of inexpensive LoRa-capable hardware. Popular options include the LILYGO T-Beam, Heltec WiFi LoRa 32, and RAK WisBlock. Available on Amazon for $30–$60.

  2. Flash the firmware

Install Meshtastic directly from your browser at flasher.meshtastic.org — no software installation needed.

  3. Install the app

Download the free Meshtastic app for iOS or Android and pair your device via Bluetooth.

  4. Start messaging

The default public channel is called LongFast. If you're in Sewanee with your device, you should be able to reach SWNE-BASE and the rest of the local mesh right away.
